Welcome to the Superfriends.org gift list server

santa.superfriends.org FAQ

Why?

A couple of reasons... First and foremost of these is because I can. The second reason would be to help my family and myself at Christmas time. I'm not a religious person at all. I'm actually an Agnostic. So, to me, Christmas is a chance to buy presents for the people close to me. I enjoy it.

My family also purports to enjoy the process, but they also report that I am impossible to buy presents for. Personally, I don't see what's so hard about buying a pair of basketball shorts. That's all I really want... But they like trying to find some middle ground between something I would like and something they picked out themselves. To that end, I have tried a couple of different methods. I tried a single list but people felt bad because there were multiple iterations of the same gift given to me. One year, I tried giving a couple of suggestions per person based on where they lived and what I perceived their means to be. They felt like I was assigning presents.

Last year, I created a gift list server so that I could make a single list and there would be no repetition without "assigning" presents. My family gave me positive responses on the result. I have to say that I was also very pleased. I got a bunch of things I wanted to get to do the Ironman and no picture frames. Not wanting to appear too selfish, I made it so that other people could use it as well.

Ironically, I didn't get a single pair of basketball shorts... Which is what I really want... But I also was able to get people things they really wanted and I didn't have to get out of bed to do most of my shopping.

Isn't Santa Claus a bit of Christian figure?

Well... Yes... I guess it would be to some. But, in my little world, Santa isn't necessarily a fat, bearded guy in a red suit. To me, Santa represents more of a generous spirit. Every one of us has the potential to be Santa Claus. Frequently, when I think of Santa Claus, I think of a tall, skinny guy named Sean that I used to live with. Sean used to buy and wrap literally dozens of small presents for friends and family. It took many, many hours out of his life to purchase, wrap and deliver these gifts, but he loved every minute of it.

What is new for santa.superfriends.org this year?

I got a lot of positive feedback, but I got some suggestions for improvement and thought of some myself. I've also gotten a lot better a programming, so I was able to fix a lot of the little quirks I knew to exist. Things that I have change include:
  • You can now view the lists of several different users without closing all instances of your browser. This does, however, require placing a cookie; but don't worry, this is a personal project, so I really don't care what you are doing with it.
  • You can now search Amazon for books and music. I couldn't figure out how to build a query string to search Amazon.com directly, so I cobbled together some of their forms.
  • People who are buying gifts can now review what items they have indicated they will purchase.
  • The reminder e-mail to people who plan to buy gifts now includes the links that are also on the web page.
  • Users can now include their shipping address in their personal data.
